31 Tickets Issued in 2nd Phase of Pedestrian Safety Initiative

Hackettstown Police continue pedestrian safety program.

The Hackettstown Police Department's "Stop for Pedestrian Multi-Officer Decoy Program" continued last week with 31 tickets issued and one drug arrest on Thursday.

According to Sgt. Darren Tynan, officers issued 18 tickets to motorists who failed to stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk, 11 tickets for cell phone violations and two other moving violations. Officers also made one drug arrest, Tynan said.

The department was awarded a $12,000 grant to give officers overtime to enforce pedestrian safety in crosswalks. The grant runs until June 2014 and also requires officers to provide demonstrations about pedestrian safety at schools, senior citizen homes and other groups.

The initiative began with a "warning phase" on Sept. 18 when officers issued 48 warnings to drivers who failed to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks and also handed out 17 tickets for cell phone and moving violations.
