Pedestrian Safety Initiative Yields 65 Motor Vehicle Stops in 4 Hours

Hackettstown Police awarded $12K grant to promote pedestrian safety in crosswalks, provide demonstrations at schools and community groups.

The Hackettstown Police Department conducted 65 motor vehicle stops, issued 17 tickets and gave 48 warnings to drivers during a four-hour "Stop for Pedestrian Multi-Officer Decoy Program" Wednesday at the intersection of Main Street and West Plane Street.

The department was awarded a $12,000 grant to give officers overtime to enforce pedestrian safety in crosswalks. The grant runs until June 2014 and also requires officers to provide demonstrations about pedestrian safety at schools, senior citizen homes and other groups, according to a department statement.

Officers issued 17 tickets—seven for cell phone use and 10 others for moving violations—during Wednesday's initiative between 3 and 7 p.m., Sgt. Darren Tynan said.

Police also issued 48 warnings for drivers failing to stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk.

"This was the warning phase of the program and summonses will be issued in other 'Stop for Pedestrian Multi-Officer Decoy Programs' for motorists not stopping for pedestrians in a crosswalk," Tynan said.
