Report: Former Net Jason Collins Reveals He's Gay

Center tells SI.com in first-person account he "didn't set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I'm happy to start the conversation.”

Former New Jersey Nets center Jason Collins, who played for six seasons with the team including a championship run in the 2002-03 season, revealed he was gay in a soon-to-be published story. Collins said in a first-person account in the May 6 edition of Sports Illustrated posted on SI.com that he “didn't set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I'm happy to start the conversation.” He tells the magazine, “I still love the game, and I still have something to offer. My coaches and teammates recognize that. At the same time, I want to be genuine and authentic and truthful.” In the story, Collins describes how the first person he came out to was his aunt, a Superior Court judge in San …

Congratulations on what exactly? Did someone ask him? I'm convinced certain gays in the media are just looking for others. What a way to get more, huh? & if you think that because Jeter runs around with hot women all the time somehow makes him not gay, then let the ignorance stay in bliss, dummy   more ›

Jaren Sina, released from his commitment to play at Northwestern University, will stay in state and play for the South Orange school.

I’m a Pirate!!! Ready to play for my state!!!!! #SetonHallPirates That’s the tweet Lake Hopatcong’s Jaren Sina sent out April 17 breaking the news he had committed to play for the South Orange college. Sina, ranked as the 23rd best point guard in the nation entering college in 2013, had previously committed to playing at Northwestern University, was released from the school’s program by request when the team fired its head coach, Bill Carmody in March. Once he was free of his obligation from the school, Sina began being courted by Alabama, who initially tried recruiting the Gil St. Bernard’s standout in 2012, Indiana, and Seton Hall. At the time of Carmody’s firing, Sina became “50-50” on staying with the program, his father told Patch. …

Hackettstown Runner Will Remember Marathon as 'Day Where People Got Killed'

Michael Leyden finished race about an hour before blasts went off.

Michael Leyden finished the Boston Marathon about an hour before a pair of blasts went off. But what typically would have been a happy memory of an accomplishment few achieve has now been plagued by destruction and pain, the Hackettstown runner told NJ.com. Leyden was one of at least three Hackettstown runners who were listed as those participating in the marathon on Monday. Before everyone could complete the race, two blasts set off killing three people and injuring more than 150 others. Other participating runners from Hackettstown were 32-year-old Ingrid Stein Garofalo and 43-year-old Billy Zaccheo. According to the Boston Athletic Association's database, Garofalo finished the race around 1:41 p.m. while Zaccheo finished at 1:19 p.m., …

The Centenary College women’s lacrosse team picked up an intense overtime victory over conference rival Gwynedd-Mercy College on Tuesday, taking down the Griffins 16-15. After a quick Griffin goal Erica Tripp, Devin Sutko, and Carlie Schmitt teamed up with goals of their one in only a two minutes span to take back the lead 4-1.   Just under the halfway mark, the Griffins responded with a goal to cut the lead in half, but Brittlyn Dendy answered right back for the …

Change of Mind – And Shirt – Saves Family at Marathon

Janice Cazes of Long Valley ended the Boston Marathon just two blocks shy of where two bombs detonated, killing three people.

It was a perfect day for a run. Temperatures hovered in the low 50s, and the sun shone brightly as Patriot’s Day in Boston was in full swing. But during the 26.2-mile challenge that weaved through the city’s residential and urban areas, runners needed to be strategic about their attire, with body temperatures fluctuating as the marathon wore on. Janice Cazes of Long Valley began the race wearing multiple layers. Her registration tag was pinned, four times over, to her top sweatshirt. But as she neared the finish line of her third full marathon, she knew she needed to stop and make a change. “I was just too hot, and I debated for a while whether I should stop or not to take off my top layer,” Cazes said. “So, I stopped and took off my top …

Hours after his resignation as Rutgers athletic director, Oakland resident Tim Pernetti called Friday a "sad day for a lot of people."

Hey Charlie- I am wondering if you have kids and if they have played D1 Collegiate sports? To say pushing kids around ( that are defenseless due to the fear of losing their scholarship ) whipping basketballs at their head and verbally abusing them is going to toughen them up for life is sound coaching--my friend you are an idiot! If a coach laid a hand on my son like Rice did I would personally …   more ›
