Officers will check up on motorists and passengers beginning this month.

Between May 20 and June 2, seat belt checkpoints and patrols will be set up and publicity of the importance of wearing seat belts will be emphasized in the area and throughout the country "to ensure that drivers and passengers recognize the life-saving value of seat belts," according to Hackettstown Police Sgt. Darren Tynan. “Using a seat belt is the simplest way for a driver and his or her passengers to protect themselves when traveling,” Gary Poedubicky, acting director of the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, said in a press release. Search for man called off after investigation reveals incident never happened, authorities report.
The search for a man who allegedly tried luring a teen boy into his car recently has ended, but not because he was found. Mount Olive police reported Wednesday that a claim made Friday by a 13-year-old boy from the Flanders section of Mount Olive was false. New Jersey State Police assisted in the initial investigation by creating a composite sketch of the man who the Flanders boy said tried to lure him – a white male in his 40s with a buzz cut driving a white van – and released it to the public and media on Monday. “While this event has been determined to be false, the Mt. Olive Township Police Department encourages all parents and caregivers to discuss safety and stranger issues with their children,” Officer Michael Russell said. “The …

'We don’t believe the community or school is any danger,' Hackettstown police chief says.
Police are looking for a man who threatened to blow up a building on the Centenary College campus Sunday night, leading to an investigation and heightened awareness in the community. Students reported seeing a male in his late teens looking into one of the residence halls while holding a red, cylindrical container, the college said. When students asked what he was doing, the teen said he was going to blow up the building, Centenary stated. It is not currently known if the man is a student at the college. During an investigation, police found discrepancies in the eyewitness accounts, and it was unknown if the teen was planning to blow up the building or the can itself, the school said. Police suggested what was reported as a gas can may …

Fluid made its way to storm drain, police said.
Hackettstown police and fire officials were on the scene at Leo's Lunch Stand Tuesday morning where hydraulic fluid spilled from a vehicle into the walkway between the restaurant and Anderson Cash Checking, according to Det. Darren Tynan. The vehicle that leaked the fluid, around 7 a.m., was a truck from Souderton, PA.
