Three More Pedestrians Ticketed in Traffic Safety Campaign

Hackettstown's pedestrian safety campaign garnered three people who jaywalked last Thursday tickets for crossing against traffic, police said.

Sixteen people passing through Hackettstown got tickets last Thursday, and three of them weren't behind a steering wheel.

Three pedestrians were given summonses for jaywalking offenses, all part of the NJ Division of Highway Traffic Safety's Pedestrian Safety Program, said Hackettstown Sgt. Darren Tynan in a release.

Hackettstown was the first town in New Jersey to be involved in a statewide pedestrian education campaign, and it is one of five municipalities participating in a pilot program to educate drivers about the high rate of pedestrian-motor vehicle crashes.

New Jersey ranks 14th in the nation in pedestrian fatalities, Tynan said.

Among the driver citations police handed out last Thursday, there were three tickets for disregarding a traffic signal, one for an illegal right on red turn, one for using a cell phone while driving, and eight other moving violations.

Hackettstown pedestrian and driver education and awareness efforts will continue into the future, Tynan said.
