Pedestrian Safety Campaign Will Launch in Hackettstown

Hackettstown is one of five municipalities participating in state-funded program.

Hackettstown is one of five municipalities in the state that has been selected for funding for a pedestrian safety education program through the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority.

The non-profit transportation management association will be working with the Hackettstown Police Department to spread the word about pedestrian safety, which contributes to 23 percent of traffic fatalities in the state, according to the NJTPA. New Jersey is 14th in the nation in terms of states with highest number of pedestrian fatalities, NJTPA reported.

Implementation of pedestrian safety initiatives could happen as soon as late fall 2013. This will include working to change pedestrian and motorist behavior, increased enforcement of pedestrian laws and education of the community.

The campaign will kick off with a meeting of Hackettstown representatives on Thursday at the municipal building.
