Cash Stolen By Alleged Liquor Store Burglar, Cops Say

Newark man smashed windows, took money from A&P Liquors on Rt. 46, police report.

A Newark man was caught in the act of allegedly burglarizing the A&P Liquor store on Rt. 46 Thursday morning, Long Valley Police Lt. Art Adams said.

Responding to a report of a burglary in progress, Officer Scott Myers saw the front doors of the liquor store and its neighboring business, Shades Hair Salon, smashed in, Adams said. Myers then saw Alan Cotugno, 32, inside the liquor store, Adams said.

When Cotugno spotted Myers, he fled to the rear of the store, with the officer giving chase, Adams said. Cotugno made his way back to the front of the store where he exited, only to be met by Myers and other officers responding to the scene, Adams said.

Cotugno was subdued and arrested. A large, undisclosed amount of cash was found on Cotugno, which was stolen from both businesses, Adams said.

Cotugno was charged with burglary, theft and criminal mischief. He was sent to the Morris County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Virtually every report of criminal activity in the newspapers, where a person is named, uses "allegedly" to avoid a lawsuit in case the person named is later found innocent. A sign of the times, based on someone filing suit and winning his/her case. Glad that Officer Myers and the officers caught the person, no shots were fired and there were apparently no injuries. Interesting that someone "allegedly from Newark" traveled to a crime free area to break into a business in crime free Washington Township, on a major highway (Route 46).

LLLV you are an attorney as well? I was l head counsel for Vandelay Industries with Lloyd Braun. From one attorney to another, you would not believe the amount of legal matters that occur within the latex manufacturing industry.
