Balloon Sparks Brush Fire in High Street Area

Mylar balloon got stuck in high tension line near railroad tracks late Monday afternoon.

A Mylar balloon that got stuck in high tension power lines caused a brush fire and power outage in the High Street area, Hackettstown Police said.

Police and fire officials responded to the railroad property in the area of High Street for a report of a brush fire at about 4:30 p.m. Monday, Sgt. Darren Tynan said.

According to Tynan, a Mylar balloon that got stuck in the power line caused sparks and ignited the brush beneath the line. There was a temporary power outage, trains were stopped and traffic was stopped in both directions on High Street in the area of the railroad tracks, Tynan said.

The Hackettstown police and fire departments as well as the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, JCP&L and NJ Transit Police responded to the scene.
