New Jersey law allows contributors who donate less than $300 to remain anonymous.
A published report Sunday revealed New Jersey’s current campaign donation system needs to be revised after it was disclosed politicians can receive more money while still keeping the names of their donors secret — as long as the contributions are less than $300. The NJ.com report said most states allow campaigns to keep only those donors who give $100, $50 or less private, but Garden State politicians don’t have to report any information about people who contribute less than $300. The report said because of the state’s secretive laws, candidates were able to hide about $12 million out of the $100 million donated. Longtime Councilman William Conforti and Councilman Scott Sheldon beat challenging Democrats Anthony Olivo and Mary Beth Maciag in Tuesday's general election, being re-elected to three-year seats on the Hackettstown governing body. There were 6,157 Hackettstown voters who hit the polls Tuesday, despite nearly 1,000 still without power due to the impact of Hurricane Sandy that struck on Oct. 29. Here's how they voted: At the Freeholder level, Warren County chose Republican Edward J. Smith over Democrat Thomas E. Palmieri by a tally of 23,233 to 15,191. The county at large voted 24,695 to 17,869 in favor of Mitt Romney over President Barack Obama.

Republican Rep. Scott Garrett captured the redrawn 5th district Tuesday, defeating Democratic challenger Teaneck Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen, the Associated Press reports. Restricting expanded Garrett's longtime Republican-leaning district to include Democratic strongholds of Hackensack and most of Teaneck. Despite being vastly out-fundraised, Gussen maintained the district was winnable with support from Bergen votes. The two candidates presented starkly different platforms, but Garrett avoided confronting Gussen directly in the campaign. Instead, the Republican congressman's attacks focused on President Obama. Running unopposed in the General Election, school board members Gus Bordi and Shawn Burke were re-elected to their seats on the Hackettstown Public School Board of Education Tuesday. Joseph Clarke was elected to a seat on the board via write-in vote. Clarke is already a member of the board, but was appointed to his seat after the deadline to file for this year's ballot. Clarke received 90 write-in votes total from the seven voting districts. Despite running uncontested, Bordi received 1,419 votes and Burke garnered 1,571 votes from Hackettstown residents. The deadline for electronic voting has been extended after email and fax ballots caused headaches Tuesday throughout the state. A high volume of requests overwhelmed county officials, including in Morris where the chairman of the Morris County Board of Elections told NJ.com it may take weeks to determine the outcome of some close local elections.
