Teachers' Academy Will Be Hosted at Local College

Centenary College will run a two-part Summer Teachers’ Academy in July and August. The first one is scheduled from July 9 to July 11, 2013 and will offer three workshops.

Attendees will learn about active learning in an inclusive classroom, using an iPad in the classroom and incorporating STEM in all subject areas. They will take away valuable new tools that can be used to enhance learning for all students in the classroom. Attendees will accrue 15 hours of professional development toward next year’s Professional Development Program by enrolling in one of the following three workshops:

The workshops will cover the following:

  • Active Learning Strategies for the Inclusive Classroom – In this workshop, the focus will be on developing a working definition of active learning, connecting differentiated instruction with brain-based learning and information processing, and gaining a variety of active learning strategies to implement in the classroom.
  • Take a Tour of the iPad – This workshop will instruct how to manage multiple iPads in the classroom, download and install software, use the iPad to control a SmartBoard or other interactive whiteboards, and much more.
  • STEM: Incorporating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics activities – This workshop will focus on STEM, the interdisciplinary approach to teaching science, technology, engineering, and math in all subject areas. Instruction will be given on STEM activities that cross disciplines and make learning interactive.

Centenary College will also offer a Summer Teachers’ Academy II from August 20 through August 22, 2013 offering two workshops. “Wikis, Webquests, and Weblogs (Blogs) – the New Three R’s” will focus on classroom uses of wikis, webquests, weblogs commonly known as blogs and prezis, which is web-based presentation software. A second workshop will cover Smartboard skills, such as using the Smartboard as a whiteboard, using the Notebook software to create interactive lessons and much more.

“Those who participate in this program will walk away with innovative and effective techniques that can be brought back to increase learning the classroom,” says Dr. Simon Saba, Associate Professor of Education at Centenary College. “This opportunity brings motivated educators together to improve and collaborate, and will be a valuable learning experience for those who participant.”

Cost is $150 for one seminar or $300 for both.   They run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch is included.
