Cash Stolen By Alleged Liquor Store Burglar, Cops Say

Newark man smashed windows, took money from A&P Liquors on Rt. 46, police report.

A Newark man was caught in the act of allegedly burglarizing the A&P Liquor store on Rt. 46 Thursday morning, Long Valley Police Lt. Art Adams said.

Responding to a report of a burglary in progress, Officer Scott Myers saw the front doors of the liquor store and its neighboring business, Shades Hair Salon, smashed in, Adams said. Myers then saw Alan Cotugno, 32, inside the liquor store, Adams said.

When Cotugno spotted Myers, he fled to the rear of the store, with the officer giving chase, Adams said. Cotugno made his way back to the front of the store where he exited, only to be met by Myers and other officers responding to the scene, Adams said.

Cotugno was subdued and arrested. A large, undisclosed amount of cash was found on Cotugno, which was stolen from both businesses, Adams said.

Cotugno was charged with burglary, theft and criminal mischief. He was sent to the Morris County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 bail.

What do they do ????? They take the clown down without incident after he burglarized and destroyed two local businesses. Professionals. They actually AREN'T following people up and down the mountain at all times after all - how do you like that !! They show up and take care of business. Thanks PD for being out there for me and my family,

Here you go- the 500 cops in long valley are actually confronted with a real crime and do the job they are hired for, big whoop. Now they can go back to following people on the mountain the other 364 days of the year. I like that they keep the illegals driving through town scared s...less.

As as attorney I must say that I find it strange that you like the fact that illegal immigrants are scared of police officers. You must be quite racist against Central and South American immigrants, whether legal or not. You have no code sir, no honor, and God is watching.

Times are so politically correct and caught in legalize that in this article the theif has to called "alleged".....Maybe he should be identified as a "economic victim".

As a pompous tool with no sense of humor who feels compelled to mention that I am an attorney (not a very successful one, or I wouldn't need to mention it), I wish the entire country to be overrun by undocumented aliens who violate the law with impunity. Furthermore I am such a complete ass that I believe my viewpoint to be endorsed by an unseen higher power (God) and invoke his name as endorsement of my demonstrated idiocy. Any one who disagrees is amoral and should be drawn and quartered.

As a pompous toolish attorney with no sense of humor I feel compelled to mention that you seem quite angry. Now while I would not consider myself a success, I have many men in my charge, and I write many reports. Why do you wish the entire country to be overun by illegal aliens John? May I call you John? I am sorry have I offended you in any way? Oh, hah, I'm sorry, I keep forgetting. You were sick the day they taught law at law school.

Good job by the WTPD. People aren't "illegal". What they do is sometimes, like going where the law doesn't permit them.

I'm a little confused here. Where exactly in the story does it mention anywhere that the suspect is an immigrant... legal or illegal???

Nowhere. Dp brought it up and has been harping on it since. Then he changed his name to something similar to mine and kept talking about how he dislikes immigrants. Strange person. Speaking as an attorney of course.

This really takes the fun out of things - the original post was not meant to be taken seriously. Max Wienberg is a bit uptight, writing too many important attorney reports apparently makes one that way. There is no illegal alien in the original crime, no one is angry, no one has it in for space aliens.

Virtually every report of criminal activity in the newspapers, where a person is named, uses "allegedly" to avoid a lawsuit in case the person named is later found innocent. A sign of the times, based on someone filing suit and winning his/her case. Glad that Officer Myers and the officers caught the person, no shots were fired and there were apparently no injuries. Interesting that someone "allegedly from Newark" traveled to a crime free area to break into a business in crime free Washington Township, on a major highway (Route 46).

LLLV you are an attorney as well? I was l head counsel for Vandelay Industries with Lloyd Braun. From one attorney to another, you would not believe the amount of legal matters that occur within the latex manufacturing industry.
