Officer Assaulted by Man Possessing Heroin, Cocaine, Cops Say
Questioning leads to altercation and drug charges, police report.
A Belvidere man was arrested on charges of assaulting a police officer and having drugs in his possession after police tried questioning him about a burglary in Hackettstown, Sgt. Darren Tynan said.
Robert Savary, 24, was walking along Main Street just before 5 p.m. Wednesday and matched the description of a burglary suspect, Tynan said. Officers asked Savary to stop, and he fled, Tynan said.
When officers caught up to Savary, he scuffled with police, causing a minor injury to one of the officers, Tynan said.
Police then found four bags of cocaine, four bags of heroin and a hypodermic needle on Savary, Tynan said. Once police determined Savary’s identity, it was determined he was not the burglary suspect, Tynan said.
Savary was charged with aggravated assault on police, obstruction of justice, resisting arrest, possession of cocaine, possession of heroin and possession of a hypodermic needle.
Savary was lodged in Warren County Correctional Facility in lieu of $25,000 bail.
